It's too far to ride to work/school/etc.
Start slowly. Check the distance when you've got some free time to see if it'll work. In 15 minutes, most people can comfortably bike 3.5km. Any distance gets easier (and faster!) if you stick with it.
Still too far? Consider driving part way and riding the rest! The exercise will help you start your day with a big smile.
It takes too long.
In urban areas, the bicycle is the speediest mode of transportation! All things considered, trips under 3km are usually faster by bike; and under 5km equal to the car. Try timing your ride. Even if the trip by bike is 10 minutes longer, remember all the benefits to your health, happiness and community!
I'm out of shape.
By leaving lots of time when you first start out, you'll find cycling no more challenging than walking. And the more you travel by bicycle, the easier it will become. Over time, you will naturally increase your speed, endurance and fitness. It'll feel great!
I can't afford a good bike.
Don't worry about getting a high-end bike or fancy gear if you're just starting out.
In time, if you decide that riding a bike is the way to go, you'll be better equipped to make a decision about what you need and don't need. And by then, you might've saved hundreds of dollars by keeping your car at home! Click here for information about different styles of bikes.
There's nowhere to store for my bike.
Is there a storage room in your building? Can keep your bicycle in your workspace? What about nearby parking areas?
If you can find a few other coworkers interested, consider approaching management about obtaining bicycle parking facilities.

I can't shower at work.
Keep a leisurely pace - enjoy your ride! - and you'll avoid the need for a shower.
If you still feel like you need a shower, try the following: cool down for a few minutes after getting to work, then use a cloth, soap and towel to freshen up in the restroom.
Some cycling and outdoor stores sell washing up gels, cloths and quick-dry towels.
Are there many of you wanting a shower at work? Consider approaching management to install one.
I have to dress nicely for work.
By taking it easy, most people can simply wear their business attire to work. The Dutch have been doing this elegantly for decades!
You could keep an extra set of clothes at work for bad weather. Some people bike to work in casual, comfortable clothes, then change when they arrive.
Panniers make it easy to carry clothes, tools, and whatever else you might need to bring to work.
And, hey, professional-looking, wrinkle-free travel clothes can be had at outdoorsy clothing stores.
I can't bike in the rain and cold.
We bet you can!
Cycling can be a year-round way to travel, and you don't have to become some sort of weird Weather Warrior to do it. While there are definitely days when it's better to leave the bike at home, investing in a few items of good gear can make cycling in virtually any weather possible!
It's not safe to ride in traffic or at night.
Many people feel cycling is not safe. In actuality, when done properly and defensively, cycling can be safer than driving. Two behavior guidelines to follow at all times are: always be visible and be predictable by following the rules of the road. Ensure you have the proper equipment - especially a helmet and reflectors/lights. Don't go without these. Check out our Factsheet: Safe Cycling to assist you in a safe and enjoyable commute.
I need my car for work.
This challenge may require a bit of creativity. Some possible answers: consider whether some of your business tasks can be carried out on a bike- use panniers, or a trailer; assign your out-of-office tasks to a specific day and drive on that day only; investigate as to whether there are workplace vehicles available for your tasks. If you really want to bike, commit to solving this challenge.
