Cycling Routes

The Peterborough area has numerous bike-friendly streets and multi-use trails to meet the needs of our local cyclists.

Download the 2011 Peterborough Trails Bikeways Map for ideas on directions to take or routes to explore.  There are also several maps showing more detail to various popular destinations in the city, shown in the Tools and Resources of Shifting Gears.  The Road Cyclists Map for Greater Peterborough identifies and rates many routes throughout the County and is available at Wild Rock Outfitters and Peterborough Green-Up.

Routes to Fleming College:  There are 3 main routes cyclists have identified for getting to and from Fleming College. The routes are mostly on City streets and are provided to assist cyclists in finding convenient, safe and interesting routes to Fleming College. Allow extra time the first time you try a route, or try it on the weekend with a friend. The first one is along the Trans-Canada Trail, coming out to Parkhill Road near Ravenwood.  Snake through the neighbourhood streets to Spillsbury, then along Forster and into the College.  The most direct route is along Clonsilla and Lansdowne to Spillbury, making use of the shared pathways along the side of the road where marked.  This route has heavy traffic and is recommended for cyclists with road riding experience.  The third route is down Monaghan Road to the Crawford Trail.  Then, follow Crawford Drive along to Fleming Drive.  For the quietest, but longer, route, continue straight to Fisher Drive and come back up to the college along Airport Road.

The following three paths are multi-use, paved paths shared by walkers, roller bladers and cyclists. When cycling these trails, be courteous, keep to the right and warn those around you of your presence by ringing your bell.

  • The Trans-Canada Trail west to Omemee and Lindsay
This section of the Trans-Canada Trail follows Peterborough's Jackson Creek from Jackson Park on Parkhill Road, westward to Ackison Road just south of Lily Lake Road and beyond to Omemee and Lindsay.
  • The Rotary Greenway Trail
This trail starts in the city at Beavermead Park and travels north along the east bank of the Otonabee River to Trent University and then to Lakefeild.  In the south the trail can be accessed at Beavermead Park on Ashburnham Road. From there, the trail winds its way into East City, meandering alongside the Otonabee River up to Trent University and then alongside River Road to meet up with the Lakefield Trail.
  • Lakefield Trail
The lovely village of Lakefield proudly boasts this 5.5 km trail that winds its way through the community, along the Otonabee River and Lake Katchawanooka. Once in the village, ask any local where to meet up with the trail. For further information call (705) 652-3381.  The trail between Trent University and Lakefield is a gem as well.
