For the employer:

Employers will be competing in one of five categories: Small, Medium and Large Workplace or Master's Class (these are the workplaces that have an exceptional tradition of participating in active and efficient commuting). The best of each category will be awarded the coveted Travel-Wise Employer award and will be featured in the media and on several websites. In addition to awards for best participation, all workplaces, regardless of participation points, will be considered for a special leadership category. A Travel-Wise Leader persuades other companies to participate and/or demonstrates notable enthusiasm in the competition.

What are the long-term benefits of active and efficient commuting?!

Active and efficient transportation provides many benefits to individuals, our employers and our community.

For the employer, they:
  • Increase productivity and engagement through improved health, energy, and overall wellbeing,
  • Improve recruitment and retention of employees due to the support of transportation alternatives,
  • Increase workplace profile as promoting environmentally-friendly activities,
  • Reduce on-site parking demand and related maintenance costs.
For the employee, they:
  • Improve physical and mental health through increased physical activity,
  • Provide commuter options and reduce the financial burdens of operating a vehicle, and
  • Support individuals as they "do their part" to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and poor air quality.
And for our community, they:
  • Decrease traffic congestion and the potential for vehicle collisions,
  • Put more "eyes on the street", improving street safety,
  • Improve the enjoyment and accessibility of our neighbourhoods,
  • Reduce the necessity of road maintenance and construction due to excess use, and
  • Showcase our community as being a steward of our environment.
